The Open University Students Association

February
2010 Newsletter
The Open University Students Association (OUSA)
is a large apolitical organisation with a widespread membership. We aim
to represent the views of Open University students whatever they study
and wherever they live. All OU students are automatically members of the
OUSA. More than 25,000 students study outside the UK, 4341 of whom live
in Southern Europe. The aim of our website is to provide useful information
to OU students living in Southern Europe.
The Southern Europe Regional Forum (SERF) has an online
FirstClass© conference: 'OUSA Southern Europe RF'. The SERF represents
the following European countries: Austria, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar,
Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.
Each country has at least one FirstClass© branch conference; some
countries have more than one, each representing a region (e.g. OUSA Br
SW France, OUSA Br Barcelona, OUSA Br Northern Italy).
FirstClass© conferences are the main point of contact
and discussion among OU students living in a same area. If you wish to
obtain access to the SERF conference please send an email from your OU
mailbox to OUSA Controller, oufcnt1.open.ac.uk, stating your Personal
Identifier. Online branches are easy to access.
From your FirstClass desktop, select the Open University
(blue shield) > OU Students' Association (green icon) > OUSA LIVE
(ear icon) > OUSA Regions > OUSA Southern Europe > select your
nearest branch and add the conference to your desktop (Collaborate >
Add to Desktop)
Visit our website if you wish to know more about the OUSA
and the SERF, and about how you can get involved.
The Southern Europe Regional Forum
The Regional Forum is a group of students who volunteer
their time to meet and discuss issues affecting students in the region
and consist of officers and representatives of each branch in the region,
as well as a member of the Executive Committee.
The Current Regional Forum Officers:
SERF CHAIR Jane Harvey (Barcelona Br)
SERF SECRETARY Haris Lamprou (Greece Br)
SERF TREASURER Amanda Marlowe (Madrid Br)
Branches
O U S A has branches at a local level. Not all branches
meet in person and not all are active at a formal level within O U S A.
But all branches do have a forum on First
Class where you can meet other students online.
See the link in the menu bar for more information about First Class. Where
newsletters are
linked these are in Word format and some personal contact details may
have been removed. Where websites
are linked these are managed by either past or current students so are
not under the direct control of O U S A. The Open University Students
Association is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Meetings are held at KLEOS S.A, 22 Vas. Konstantinou
Ave, (5th floor), Pagrati, Athens
It is between the Kallimarmaro Stadium and the National Research Centre
and can be easily accessed either by any bus/trolley going to Pagrati or
the Metro Station (Evagelismos).
We welcome all members and would appreciate any comments or ideas on how
to improve our website, or any other aspect of being an OU student in Greece.
For those unable to attend meetings but would like to contribute ideas,
or if anyone needs clarification or information, please contact the Chair,
Lorraine Adams. Branch meetings aren’t just stuffy business meetings;
they have a strong element of social interaction too. They’re where
you get your say on all aspects of your Association, and also a fantastic
way to meet local people who truly understand what that distance learning
thing is all about!

As you might wonder why it’s so important to have
an active branch and what it is doing for you, well, that depends on you
first of all. We are organising a social event on the last Saturday of every
month in a variety of locations, writing four newsletters a year –
all to connect the OU students in the German part of Switzerland –
and we also try to represent you in the OUSA organisation. The details of
all social events have still to be organised. If you would like to find
a nice restaurant, a pub or another nice place to be, please feel free to
get in touch with Susanne. We can organise the event together and I’ll
send the details out to our branch members on First Class.
