R13 - The Open University Students Association in the South East

  newsletter

I've been studying with the O U since 2004, graduating last year with a Humanities degree and I am currently studying sciences to help with the teacher training. I've been involved with OUSA for the last 2 years, with my branch, the Region and the Disabled Students' Group, holding assorted posts as the need required, which has given me a whole new group of friends as well as a real interest in how our University works. I stood for the Executive Committee when our former E C M needed to stand down, as I wanted to ensure we had representation on the E C, particularly at this time when O U S A is going through a period of change."

Message from your Executive Committee Member

"Our Region covers a wide area and getting to meetings is not always easy. With input from you, we can work towards making it possible for students to access the meetings they wish to attend, online or face-to face. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can manage, whether in the real world or the virtual one.

If you have any questions, or would just like a chat, I can be contacted through my FirstClass mailbox – Ousa Ecm Sth East – or email E C M South East "

Branches
O U S A has branches at a local level. Not all branches meet in person and not all are active at a formal level within O U S A. But all branches do have a forum on First Class where you can meet other students online. See the link in the menu bar for more information about First Class. Where newsletters are linked these are in Word format and some personal contact details may have been removed. Where websites are linked these are managed by either past or current students so are not under the direct control of O U S A. The Open University Students Association is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Branch News
Newsletters are linked from the Branch name where highlighted.
For info about meetings and other events please see the Local Events page.

If the branch is not showing any useful info and you are interested in corresponding with other students locally please either visit the First Class Forum for the branch, contact Jenny Turner, OUSA ECM South East, or the Point of Contact, if there is one.
Brighton, Hove & Lewes
Brighton Hove and Lewes branch meet on the first Monday of the month at around 7:30pm in the Cricketer's Pub on Black Lion Stree in The Lanes, Brighton. Look out for a copy of Sesame somewhere at the back of the pub. The treasurer is Simon Rees and the secretary is Colin Piper. If you write to him he will put you on the branch mail list. You can also keep up with all the latest news by making sure the branch conference is on your desk top, you will find detailed directions to the meeting venue there as well.
What is an OUSA Branch and am I allowed to come?
As a student at the Open University you are automatically a member of the Open University Students Association (OUSA). OUSA represents your interests at every level within the University, up to and including Senate, and outside the University by lobbying the Government and campaigning with other interested groups on relevant issues. It’s only fair to warn you however that most people don’t seem particularly interested in doing much ‘politics’ but rather see the Branches’ role as a meeting place and point of contact. Open University students can feel very isolated and distant from their colleagues and tutors; it is a distance learning institution after all. All of us who attend the Branch value the chance to meet and chat informally with an eclectic bunch of intelligent people and our discussions range over just about every conceivable subject. And so, on the first Monday of every month, we meet at the Cricketer’s Pub, Black Lion Street, Brighton, at 7:30pm. look for us at the back with some OUSA logo on display somewhere. If you want to go onto my mailing list then just send me an email.. Another way to keep in touch is to get onto the Branch Conference on FirstClass (OUSA Br Brighton Hove).
